Get to know your studio teachers - Hazel Mulley

Get to know your teachers at Victoria Rose Pilates Studio…

Hazel Mulley, a fantastic Matwork and Reformer teacher sat down with me to chat all things Pilates and more, have a read to get to know her better!

Welcome Hazel! So tell me about your Pilates journey

My Pilates journey began in Bristol taking classes with Clara Farque. She was my first Pilates teacher that I clicked with, her training was with APPI (Australian Physiotherapy Pilates Institute) and I loved her style of teaching.

I was already a Yoga teacher at the time; having taught yoga for years alongside my make up artist career within the film and tv industry! Before which I spent 10 years working abroad on yachts!

Both those careers didn’t leave much time for wellness or making time for myself, which I found challenging.

So I left the film industry to pursue Yoga full time and at the same time found Pilates with Clara. During my time with Clara I loved seeing and feeling the changes in my body. I was going to class 3 times a week and loving it!

After speaking with Clara I decided to get my Matwork qualification, and decided to go with APPI.

During my matwork training myself, Nate (my now husband) and Obi (our dog) moved to Norwich. And here we are!

What got you interested in apparatus, and further training on the reformer?

I have always been interested in trying reformer, it looked so much fun!

My sister had been doing reformer and apparatus for years in London and was telling me how great it was. Plus being someone who is hypermobile myself it was great to discover the reformer provided this fantastic structure and feedback that gives a different experience to matwork, and it’s really nice to have something that gives you that framework to work against.

I was eager to expand my knowledge so started to take reformer classes here in Norwich!

From there I began my teacher training with Julie Driver to learn the reformer, working across both classical and contemporary machines. Completing my final test earlier this year!

So, talking about the fact you are both reformer and matwork trained, what kind of teacher would you say you are?

I have been told I am a very calm teacher. I would say I am probably a very grounded person and teacher too.

What can people expect from your class?

I will be giving very nurturing classes, with lots of positive feedback to encourage clients through the work. I do offer hands on adjustments where needed.

I am keen on building the strong foundations, encouraging precision within the work to make sure everyone is confident with what they are doing.

I would say I am much more a teacher rather than an instructor, I want to educate clients to be able to take ownership over their own body and movement.

ok so we now know about you as a teacher but we want to find out more about Hazel the person too! so what do you do when you are not doing pilates?

Majority of my time is spent with my big white fluffy wolf of a Dog, called Obi! Walking him, brushing him, grooming him…he’s my cloud bear! You might see him around the studio from time to time.

I also love to do sauna, wild swimming, and paddleboarding. I mean a lot of my time is spent doing Pilates, so can I say that?!

Lastly what is something people might not know about you?

I am a newlywed, having gotten married at the end of August. That’s what I have actually been mostly doing this past year, planning my wedding! Which has now turned into planning my honeymoon, which will hopefully be in Chilli in the spring time of next year!

Hazel will be joining us in the studio when we open in January 2025, teaching group Reformer, Matwork and private sessions.

You can take class with her from January 13th, simply join the waitlist to pre-book.

Be sure to give her a follow on social media and book your spot on her studio classes!
